Velocicrafter began with a joke that got way out of hand. In September of 2010, my husband and I discovered that we were expecting our first child. My husband has a little sister who was 7 years old at the time, and upon hearing that she was going to be an aunt, she demanded to know if she would be having a niece or a nephew. My husband, in a perfect monotone, informed her that our child would be neither, and would instead be a velociraptor. His sister calmly explained that she did not want to be the aunt of a dinosaur, but he informed her it was really out of our hands. She ultimately relented, requesting that next time we try for a girl instead.

Our kiddo, due in May, will have a proper name on his or her birth certificate, but I suspect we’ll be using the nickname “Raptor” until he or she is old enough to complain about it. And probably even then.

The point of this blog, if you hadn’t guessed already, is to allow a first-time expecting mother to ramble and worry and brag about everything that comes with transitioning into parenthood. I’ve never spent a notable amount of time around children or infants, didn’t know the first thing about being pregnant or giving birth, and had no idea the nesting instinct could cause one to create and explore so many projects. If you’re looking for tutorials, you’re in the wrong place. Most of what I make I find from patterns, magazines, or other blogs, and the people responsible for them are far more capable of instructing you than I am. On the other hand, however, this isn’t your standard “mommy blog” where I detail every single incident that occurs in my painfully average life. Velocicrafter is a blend of ideas and concerns, of research and first-hand discovery, of crafting and velociraptors.

Hope you enjoy.

And here all this time, I thought you were just laying around being lazy. I have no doubt that you and Ken will be great parents. And that the kiddo(s) will be in good hands. I’m impressed with the care the U.S. Military provides the families.
We can’t wait to meet the little guy.
